Ace songwriter and singer, Michael Jackson was born on august 29, 1958, in Gary, Indiana to an Afro-American parents. His father Joseph Jackson himself was a guitarist who gave up his passion to provide his family the daily bread and butter and became a crane operator. Michael Jackson’s family consisted of his parents, 4 elder brothers and a sister. Joseph recognizing the talent in his sons encouraged them to form a musical team in the early 1960’s. The musical team at first consisted of Michael’s older siblings Tito, Jermaine and Jackie. When Michael was five years old, he joined the musical team and soon became the lead vocalist of the band. As a young performer he gained applauses from audience for his in-depth emotional expressions and convey complex themes. Marlon, who was the older brother of Michael, joined the group evolving the Jackson 5.
Joseph Jackson became violent with his children and pushed the team on the path of success. With the fear of violence from his father, the complete team spent restless hours practicing and rehearsing for their act. Jackson 5 slowly picked up and built a strong following in the local areas. This has made them to record their own song, “Big Boy” with side-b “You’ve Changed” songs, which could not produce the required interest.
With the attention they have got in the local areas, the Jackson 5 started their career as an opening act for R&B artists such as Gladys Knight, Pips, James Brown and Dave. All these performers were signed by the Motown Record label, owned by Berry Gordy. It has been said that Gladys Knight was the person to introduce the Jackson 5 to the Motown Record Label and its owner Berry Gordy. Berry Gordy was impressed with the group’s performance and made an agreement in the year 1968.
The group had to move to Los Angeles to start their new work and learn dance under the supervision of their father, who was also the manager of the band Jackson 5. The group stayed in Los Angeles with Supreme singer Diana Ross and Berry Gordy. A year later, in 1969, Berry Gordy introduced the Jackson 5 group to the music industry at a special event for the Supremes. The official first album “Diana Ross Presents Jackson 5″ hit the chartbusters in the month of December in the same year. The album’s first single, “I Want You Back” hit the number one spot in the Billboard 100 in January 1970.
