Who hasn’t heard about Michael Jordan and Michael Jackson? They have been around for more than 20 years, and yet their names still remain two of the most frequently spoken-of by their legions of fans all over the world.
Interestingly, the iconic duo doesn’t belong into the same field. Almost everyone knows that Michael Jordan carved his name in baskbetball and even in baseball (though rather infamously). On the other hand, Michael Jackson is known for coming up with multitudes of hit songs and albums, most notably Thriller. But do you know that these two have worked together before?
A Slight Rewind
Before we get into that momentous event, let’s take a look back at the history of both Michael Jordan and Michael Jackson. Michael Jeffrey Jordan is hailed by the National Basketball Association (NBA), which he was a member of for a very long time, as the greatest player of basketball in history. What’s more, if not for his great influence, NBA would not have been as famous and most sought after by basketball players all around the globe. He’s also one of the most effective sportsperson-spokesperson for a variety of products, such as shoes.
All throughout his career in basketball, he has won the Most Valuable Player award five times, while he garnered three All-star MVPs. He also had the highest score average for a regular season in NBA: 30. 12 for every game. Of course, he is the king of slam dunk and the only one who can pull it off with his tongue out. Then, we have Michael Jackson. Born in Gary, Indiana, he was one-fifth of the Jackson Five, a family singing group that became so popular during the 1960s until the 1980s. They have come up with a lot of hits, such as “I’ll Be There, ” “I Want You Back, ” and “Love You Save.”
However, Michael has proven himself to stand on his own. In 1971, he decided to embark on a solo career. It was in 1982 when his album Thriller was released, and to say that it was a hit is an understatement. Until today, it remains the highest-selling album. He also had a lot of entries in Guinness World Records, like the Most Successful Entertainer of All Time after winning countless Grammys and singles that hit no. 1 around the globe.
Unique Combination
Sports and music–they don’t seem to mix–not until both Michaels came along. Michael Jordan and Michael Jackson somehow shared an interesting love for the spotlight. Jordan was affiliated once with Looney Tunes, after he appeared with Bugs Bunny in a Nike commercial. Meanwhile, Jackson once played a scarecrow in the 1978 The Wiz as well as Captain EO of Francis Ford Coppola.
It wasn’t impossible therefore for these two to work together, and it eventually happened in 1992. Jackson filmed the music video for his song “Jam” with no less than the king of court Michael Jordan. It’s somehow appropriate knowing that the latter also starred in a movie called Space Jam. The end result? It may not be the best video of all time, but hey, it’s definitely one of a kind.
