“This Halloween, one of the hottest costumes is likely to be a Michael Jackson Costume. Yes, even though the King of Pop was in seclusion for the last part of his life, many, many children still remember the Gloved One and want to imitate his unique style. So, how can you make a Michael Jackson costume without breaking the budget? Especially with the economy in the state its’ in and the problems that so many Americans are having with making ends meet, it’s important to find ways to save money.
I’m reminded of an old episode of the Golden Girls, that show about four retirees living together in a house in Miami, Florida. In the episode, Dorothy, one of the four ladies, wins a substantial sum of money in the lottery and decides to hide the ticket inside of an old leather jacket. Unbeknownst to her, Sophia (her mother) donates the jacket to the local thrift shop when they come around collecting. Thus ensues a frantic race to get to the thrift shop and find the jacket in question before someone accidentally discovers the lottery ticket inside the pocket. They get to the store only to find that the jacket has been purchased. I won’t bother you with what happens next because that’s not the point of this article.

So what does this story have to do with Michael Jackson and a Michael Jackson costume? Simple, the purchaser of the jacket was supposedly the “gloved one.” And you too can go ahead and find something similar. Head to the local thrift shop and hunt down an old leather jacket, give your kid a white t-shirt and black pants to wear and low and behold, you’re half way to your costume.
Speaking of thrift shops, they are available in most parts of the country and not all of them cater to only the poor and downtrodden. Quite the contrary, one can find some real bargains in a thrift shop. Even someone with expensive taste can often find cool antiques to take home while hunting down that old leather jacket for the kid.
Once you have the jacket, the next step is to get an old black glove (leather would be best, but anything will do in black as long as it isn’t too thick) and then attach some sequins around the edges. Add a flat hat for perfect effect and before you know it, you’ll have an instant Michael Jackson costume.
