Dance is one of the most beautiful creative talents known to the world. The gestures in a dance form have the ability to articulate any emotion or expression possible. This artistic potential could be inherent or can be acquired later in life.
Today, there are numerous forms of dance specific to the ethnicities around the world but the very conception of dance can be traced back to the year 1903. It was then that a novel dance method was deciphered by Isadora Duncan, who propagated dance as a divine art.
Ruth St. Dennis contributed immensely towards this art form in 1905. Her dance forms were inspired by Oriental culture and arts. The artist along with her husband was also responsible for founding the Denishawn School and Dance Company in 1915. This was an important milestone in the history of modern dance as students graduating from this school became imminent artists, taking the art form to further heights such as Martha Graham, Doris Humphrey and Charles Weidman. Ruth St. Dennis’s husband, Shawn, also established a male dance troupe in 1933.
The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater commenced in the year 1958 when Alvin Ailey gave a performance. The face of modern dance went through a huge transformation in 1962 through the efforts of Trisha Brown belonging to the New York’s Judson Dance Theater. With the onset of the 1970s, this artistic expression evolved to a higher level incorporating many radical views and gained footing across the globe.
The dance form of ballet came into limelight in the decade of the 1980s with Mark Morris, Twyla Tharp, Eliot Feld and Karole Armitage as prominent figures. Soon after, the scenario was ruled by the legendary star, Michael Jackson, whose name remains embedded in the hearts of dance lovers till date. His exclusive movements such as the moonwalk stand as a landmark in the history of dance. Gradually innovations crept in, paving the way for contemporary dance forms.
