In the 80s, Michael Jackson electrified us with his music and energy. I still remember very clearly, the journey to acquiring my own Thriller album.
The year was 1983, and on the 6 hour bus drive to our school camp, some of the school kids were listening to tracks such as Beat It and Billy Jean.
I knew that LPs were around the $9 – $12 price range, so I started saving my $2 per week allowance. Well it was the longest 5 weeks of my life, but I was then the proud owner of the Thriller LP, to which I listened to, every day without fail. Over and over.
Rollerskating in 1984 and 1985, it was compulsory for the DJ to play the 8 minute Thriller movie. We would all stop skating and sit in the middle of the rink, and watch it on the big screen.
If you were listening to music in the 80s, there’s a very good chance that you would have of had the Thriller album, too.
Regardless of age, most of you will know of Michael’s music, and his signature dance moves.
The good news, is that there are a heap of cool costumes available, so you can be Startin Something.
An easy one, would be to:
- Wear a really nice jacket.
- You could be daring, and find a coloured jacket.
- Add some sequins and gold buttons.
- Match with a black pair of pants.
- Black shoes and white socks.
- And the piece of resistance.. a single glitter mesh glove! Seriously, you must have the glove, yet you probably don’t already have one. Oh, it would be 80s awesome, if you also bought a Michael Jackson wig.
Finally, put on some finishing touches, with dark sunnies, and a fedora hat.
As we move into a new decade, there is evidence in music clips, magazines and movies, that it’s cool to have a fun and zany taste in fashion. Some have put this down to the gloom of the financial crisis, and they may be right.
