Baseball has seen its fair share of botched national anthems, but at Tuesday night’s MLB All-Star game they were treated to a stunning home run.
The Emmy-nominated star of the Fox hit “Glee,” Amber Riley , delighted fans with a pitch-perfect rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner” after a moving performance of Christina Aguilera ‘s “Beautiful.”
Colbie Caillat , a two-time Grammy winner, then belted out “God Bless America” during the seventh-inning stretch.
For Riley, singing at a big-time MLB game was old hat.
Last fall, she and her “Glee” castmates sang the national anthem during a World Series matchup between the New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies .
Riley and Caillat join the ranks of elite singers like Sheryl Crow , Carrie Underwood and Brian McKnight who have all performed at the MLB All-Star Game in recent years.
But while these singers delivered grand slam performances, many before them have struck out.
In 2002, pop singer Anastacia had a slightly lesser offense when she botched the words of the national anthem before the All-Star Game, singing “perilous night” instead of “perilous fight.”
The following year at the American League Championship Series , Michael Bolton briefly forgot the lyrics and had to look at his hand, where he had apparently written down the words.
But the most famous anthem foul-up remains Roseanne Barr ‘s, who in 1990 grabbed her crotch and spit while belting out an off-key rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” during a San Diego Padres baseball game.
