While some neighbors ran from the flames, Roland Sanchez ran toward them.
Sanchez, a veteran Miami Beach firefighter/paramedic, came to the aid of a man who was badly burned when a Florida Power & Light transformer box exploded and caught fire Saturday in Kendall.
The man was not immediately identified.
“Basically, I didn’t even think,” said Sanchez, who was off-duty when he heard the explosion and saw the fire about 11 a.m. “Somebody needed help, and I went to help him.”
Sanchez was home when he heard a boom! Then the power went out.
When he ran out the front door of his home in the 9400 block of 146th Place, he first saw a silver Nissan Murano SUV in flames.
Neighbor Gabriela Nanetti-Palacios, 23, said the SUV hit the three-foot-tall transformer box, which stands on her neighbor’s front lawn.
Neighbors said the explosion occurred after the men got out of their vehicle and tried to put the box back in place. Something happened, and the transformer exploded and caught fire, neighbors said. For tense moments, the flames shot higher than the second-story window from which Nanetti-Palacios watched the events unfold.
One of the men, his clothes ablaze, ran from the fire. Sanchez grabbed him, and patted his body with small, quick movements. Sanchez laid the man on the grass and took off his shirt, which peeled away his skin. He continued, gently, to smother the flames with his hands.
Sanchez got a second-degree burn on one finger. It looked like the man had second-degree burns over 30 percent of his body, Sanchez said.

The victim was not immediately identified. Sanchez said he spoke only Spanish, and was in his mid-30s.
Nanetti-Palacios and Sanchez’s family members both called 911. Sanchez waited with the burn victim for about five minutes until police and fire rescue arrived.
“He kept on asking me how his face was,” Sanchez said. “I think he was more in an emotional shock than anything else. I don’t think he knew what was really going on.”
The second man had minor burns on his hands, Sanchez said.
Nanetti-Palacios watched the burn victim as he lay on the ground. She later thought about the firefighter’s quick response. “I think if he wasn’t there, things could have probably gone a lot worse,” she said.
Sanchez said the man was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital. His condition was not available Sunday night.
