Sony has confirmed that the PS3 will be able to playback Blu-ray 3D movies when it finally releases the often-promised firmware update this September.
The details came from an interview with Sony’s Mike Hocking on CVG . When that happens, PS3 owners won’t have much content to choose from. Right now, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is the only Blu-ray 3D movie available.
People who happen to buy a 3D TV from Panasonic or Samsung can get other movies with special pack-in offers, but Cloudy is currently the only standalone BD 3D title that you’ll find on store shelves.
The exact date for the PS3 update was not revealed, however when it does happen, Sony’s other Blu-ray Disc players that it describes as “3D ready” will also get a 3D firmware update.
