WORLD and European champion Katie Taylor tops the bill at a major fight night scheduled for Cork’s Rochestown Park Hotel on November 11.

The event will see top fighters from An Garda Sochna and Rylane boxing club host the elite of the New York Police Department. The relationship began when the Garda/Rylane selection provided the opposition for the NYPD at a sell-out show in New York to raise monies for relatives of the victims 9/11.

“It has been a healthy relationship and we have boxed three times in New York – this year at the exclusive New York Athletic Club on the eve of St Patrick’s Day,” Rylane coach, Dan Lane, said.

“Next year’s show is scheduled for Madison Square Garden and that will be another huge event. We are hoping to have Katie on that bill as well because there is a huge interest in her in the US. It was on our return from the US that the appearance in Cork was finalised. Katie was on her way back from New York where she was guest of honour at the St Patrick’s Day celebrations in the White House and we were returning from boxing in New York.”

Lane continued: “We have a long relationship with the Taylors because her father, Pete, shared a dressing room with us at the national championships when he won the light heavyweight title and our own Seanie O’Regan won the heavyweight title.

“Our relationship with the Garda Boxing Team and Det. Sgt Larry Morrison continues to prosper and we are looking forward to staging another sell-out dinner show. Tickets will go on sale in early October.”

Rylane BC, now 32 years in existence, has hosted several major tournaments over the years including a multi-nations tournament in conjunction with the IABA, the Four Nations Tournament at the INEC in Killarney and big shows in the Green Glens in Millstreet. Over the winter several members of the Cork football panel trained at the club for a big charity boxing show at the Rochestown Park.
